"An insult to human dignity": Mother of Bondi stabbing victim hits out at the media

The mother of Bondi stabbing victim Jade Young has hit out at how social media and major news outlets reported on her daughter's death.

Jade Young, 47, was one of six people fatally stabbed by Joel Cauchi during his violent rampage at Bondi Junction Westfield on April 13th.

Following the tragedy, graphic videos and images of the attacks were circulated online.

Now, Jade's mother Elizabeth Young, writing in the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday, said it was “shameful” how her family found out about Jade’s death.

“Members of my family recognised Jade and her husband Noel in uncensored vision being played on a mainstream TV news feed, with vision of Jade lying on the ground at the shopping centre, receiving CPR,” she wrote.

“The vision, shared on social media and picked up — and used by — multiple news media programs shared my daughter’s final moments with millions. Finding out that a loved one has been murdered is a horror that I do not wish on anyone. But seeing the vision of their last moments and knowing it has been broadcast to millions of people is an appalling breach of privacy and an insult to human dignity.”

Ms Young went on to say how some of the major media organisations that shared violent images of the Bondi stabbing “approached our family within hours of the attack, offering their condolences … and the opportunity to share our family’s story”.

“These same media organisations reported the failure of a certain popular social media platform to take down videos, without acknowledging their own complicity,” she said.

“I am not surprised at their hypocrisy, but I am angry.”

“Sharing violent images or personal material from the lives of victims of crime is not free speech — it is enormously profitable for some but it’s speech with a steep price for the victims,” she said.

“Those who run social media platforms are remote from the pain inflicted by their uploads and the dystopia they have helped create. It is the victims who bear the cost.”

Last week, hundreds of mourners attended a public memorial for Ms Young, an acclaimed architect and mother-of-two, where mourners were encouraged to wear colourful clothing “in memory of Jade”.

Image credits: Getty Images / Facebook

"Never again": Bondi stabbing victim’s mother shares heartbreaking plea

The tragic events of April 13th at Westfield Bondi Junction shook the nation to its core. Among the victims of this senseless act was Jade Young, a 47-year-old architect, described by her mother Elizabeth as "glorious" and "hardworking". Her life was abruptly taken while shopping for a birthday present with her daughter.

At a memorial service held in Sydney’s Botanic Gardens, hundreds gathered to pay their respects to Jade. At the request of Jade's heart-broken mother, Elizabeth, mourners adorned themselves in bright colours, a vibrant tribute to a woman described as "dearly loved and irreplaceable".

Elizabeth's words cut through the sombre air, pleading for attention not only to her daughter's memory but to the pressing issues that led to her untimely demise.

“I would like you to listen, I want Australia to listen,” Elizabeth said. “Jade Young was attacked and killed outright in front of her daughter.”

As part of her tribute, Elizabeth then made a poignant call for action. “Never again do I want to read the words tragic or tragedy associated with the perpetrator of the murder of my daughter,” she said. “He came prepared, he had intention. He was a killer ... making a shopping centre the most dangerous place on earth for Jade.

“I want Jade’s girls to grow up believing there is security, goodness and love in the world. I want politicians both federal and state to address the gaps in mental health care to make it a safer for our girls and all Australians.”

It's a wish echoed by countless families who have been touched by tragedy and who long for a safer, more compassionate society.

The outpouring of support following Jade's passing speaks volumes about the impact she had on those around her. Her colleagues at Georgina Wilson Associates, where she dedicated over a decade of her life, shared heartfelt messages of grief and disbelief. "Jade was family," they wrote, a sentiment that resonates with all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In the wake of this tragedy, the generosity of strangers has shone brightly, with over $235,000 donated to support Jade Young's husband and daughters. It's a testament to the kindness and compassion that exist within our communities, a glimmer of hope in the face of darkness.

Images: GoFundMe

It was a name we already had and as I was getting so heavily pregnant, people were saying ‘he’s so cosy in your belly’.

“It confirmed to us that is what we should name him... we were like ‘Oh my God, it’s meant to be’.”

Jade also mentioned that she understood Koazy’s name wasn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea and that “everyone is entitled to their own opinion”.

“But it’s just different when there’s this comment section open on such a big influencer’s video of people, fully grown adults, just sat there slandering my baby’s name.

“I think it’s quite cruel – and if I had posted that video personally, I think I would have been very mindful of who was being named and how that can have an effect on other people,” she said.

Jade’s TikTok has since gone viral with over 6.8 million views, and fans have supported her right to name her child whatever she liked.

“Koazy is a lovely name,” one person wrote.

“Everyone has an opinion, but a name is personal to the parents who chose it and shouldn’t be judged by anyone else. Stay strong,” commented another.

The Howards have since turned the comments off their podcast.

Image: Instagram, TikTok

Body language expert reveals “telling” signs Michael Clarke lied

A body language expert has weighed in on the infamous public scuffle where former Cricketer, Michael Clarke, was accused of cheating on his girlfriend, Jade Yarbrough.

Louanne Ward, an Australian relationship expert, told The Daily Mail that some of Clarke's words and actions were indicative of him not telling the truth.

The first sign that Clarke wasn't being truthful was when he took his shirt off to try and "make himself look bigger".

"People....often make really big, bold gestures in an attempt to intimidate, look at the way Michael was walking in that video and you'll notice his arms are rounded and splayed," she said.

She also told The Daily Mail that removing his shirt is a "fight response".

The second sign the expert identified was the rising inflections in his voice as he pleaded with his girlfriend.

"When someone is not telling the truth, their voice goes up a little bit at the end of a word," she highlighted.

"You'll notice that you can definitely hear the inflections in Michael's voice when he speaks to Jade".

Another "telling" sign was Clarke's choice to deflect the argument back to Jade.

"Go, hit me ... do it again. You're wrong, you're f**king wrong," Clarke deflected in the video.

The expert said that in choosing to say "you're wrong" instead of "I", "he's not taking any responsibility," which could be "indicative of guilt".

Another subtle sign, according to the expert, was that he "kept shuffling his feet while he was standing with Jade", which is a natural response.

The expert said that when people are being accused of something, "the limbic brain - which controls our behavioural and emotional responses - switches on and freezes body responses."

"So when he can't keep his feet still, that could seem to be a sign of something not quite right".

The last tell-tale sign was that he tried to invade Jade's personal space despite her walking away from him.

"Clearly, Michael got slapped and that's a big invasion of personal space," said the expert.

"But when someone tries to remove themselves from the situation like Jade walked off, and you go and follow them and get back in their space".

The expert said that it's impossible to tell if someone is lying based on their body language alone and that we should look out for clusters of behaviours.

"If they have three different things, then you can certainly tell that if they're not being dishonest, then there is something that is making them exceptionally uncomfortable, it's important to look at all aspects of their behaviour," she said.

Image: Getty

Karl Stefanovic and Michael Clarke caught in public scuffle over cheating claims

Australian cricket legend Michael Clarke and TV personality Karl Stefanovic have been filmed in a fight over cheating claims while holidaying in Noosa.

The incident occurred on January 10 and was released to The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday.

Clarke and Stefanovic were having dinner with their partners, Jade and Jasmine Yarbrough, when their friendly dinner was cut short as Jade confronted Clarke after she reportedly contacted the former cricketer's ex-partner Pip Edwards.

“You f**ked her on December 17 … You f**ked her, you’re a f**king dog,” Jade screamed.

Clarke vigorously denied the accusations, saying that he was with their celebrity accountant friend Anthony Bell.

"Baby, baby, Belly was at the house. I swear on my life, I swear at my life… That's not true, it's not true," he continued.

Jade refuted, saying that his ex-partner told her about it: "You're f**king lying to me. You are a piece of s**t. I just spoke to her. What is wrong with you?"

At this moment, her sister Jasmine and Stefanovic tried to intervene, which led to Clarke taking his anger out on the TV show host.

"Karlos, I can tell you now c**t, don't you f**king walk away. She can, she can punch me, but not you, you c**t," Clarke said.

Jade continued to yell at Clarke and hit him.

“You piece of s**t, don’t you f**king speak to him,” she defended her brother-in-law.

Clarke insisted that Jade was wrong, to which Jade retorted: "Oh am I wrong? You f**ked her [Edwards] on December 17, you f**ked her… you're a f**king dog… I'm going to show her every f**king message you ever f**king sent me".

The video footage ended with Jasmine and Bell separating the couple.

In a statement to The Daily Telegraph, the former cricketer accepted full responsibility for his actions.

“I’m absolutely gutted I’ve put people I hold in the highest regard in this position,” he said. “My actions in the lead-up to this altercation were nothing short of shameful and regrettable.

“I am shattered that because of my actions I’ve drawn women of class and integrity, and my mates, into this situation.”

“I own this fully and am the only one at fault.”

Clarke’s ex, Edward, also released a statement, hitting back with: “This is not my circus"

“Yet again, Michael in his true nature has not taken responsibility for his actions and I was blatantly lied to," she said.

Karl Stefanovic has yet to release a statement, with the topic being ignored on today's segment of The Today Show.

Image: Getty, The Daily Telegraph, 7News
